Hi -

For what it's worth, in the absence of anyone else doing this (that I'm aware) here is my

very primitive and probably badly botched estimate calculation for the EXTRA US deaths attributable to the Trump Administration's incompetence and meddling, as of this date 2020-04-12:

17,599 (and counting)

The number will change from day to day as more data comes in from the US and from around the world.

*Note that this estimate for the moment may be badly off due to various factors, up to and including my own lack of knowledge of how to perform the estimate competently (again I'm only doing it for lack of others more qualified stepping in). Also, as to data, in particular the estimate may be too high due to under-reporting of deaths from other countries. I'll repost and change the method, when possible, and pending useful feedback.

  • If someone has experience or ability with such calculations and wants to put forth some sort of disagreement or constructive criticism, please do.

Data, from these sources:
[worldometers.info]
[worldometers.info]

7,777,333,518 World population
113,312 World Deaths
14.5 World average deaths per 1m people
330,585,614 US population
21,667 US Deaths
65 US Average Deaths per 1m people

Calculations based on data:
7,446,747,904 Not Counting US: World Population
91,645 Not counting US: World Deaths
12.31 Not Counting US: World average deaths per 1m
4,068 primitive calculation estimate of approximate number of us deaths that would have been reported as of this date, if US average had been in-line with world average as of this date.
17,599 primitive calculation estimate of extra reported US deaths attributable to worse than average US response, as of this date

Notes, personal comments/opinions:

Personal comments:

  • personal assumption: Data from some countries may be badly inaccurate (on the low side), whether due to dishonest reporting, or the chaos of dealing with an emergency, or for other reasons. This means that my method probably errs too high and probably will need to be adjusted to yield lower estimates. A way to do this would be if we could have a defensible method of estimating the under-reporting of some portions of the world.
  • ideally the US average should not be compared to the Ex-US world average, but to an average of those nations that have higher than average resources and expertise
  • As well, the US average should be compared to those countries that handled the emergency so far better-than-average (such as Taiwan, New Zealand and perhaps South Korea), and some discussion of whether these should be the benchmark for understanding the depth of the US failure.
  • a better estimate might perhaps take into account rural versus urban compositions of some countries, allowing for different response expectations for those different types
  • this estimate is not made by someone with expertise. It is made because we are weeks overdue for some sort of estimate along these lines, and to the best of the author's knowledge, no defensible (or other) estimate has been widely published and, in particular, there is (in the view of the author and others) some need to shine a light immediately on the incompetent response of the Trump administration that has resulted in so many extra US deaths, and which will result in so many more.

Calculation for 2020-04-13, about 1:00 PM Mountain Standard Time, same sources:

Approximately 19,171 extra US deaths estimated by this researcher attributed to incompetence and meddling of President Trump, so far.

Again - the method is based on comparing US averages and totals to those of other countries, so if reports come in from all other countries that are strongly higher (beyond the increases from the US) then then the estimate for the Trump-attributable "extra" numbers may go down.

aside from continuing and more widely distributing this calculation, what needs doing I think is an additional calculation as to how much extra Mr. Trump has reduced various economic metrics (GDP, jobs, extra deaths due to the extra drags on the economy). I have put this question to a friend of mine, as I'm not sure exactly how to approach it.
