Does anybody here own any radioactive dishware? Maybe have grandparents with some on the shelves? The Uranium Glass (aka Depression glass & vaseline glass) is fairly low down on the the radioactivity in general but is such pretty stuff. Ceramics like Fiestaware and others can often be surprisingly hot!
How interesting! I have a few pieces of pink Depression glass, passed down from my grandmother. I have never thought to check them for radioactivity.
I have a few science-nerd friends; I'm sure that at least one of them has a UV light (and maybe even a Geiger counter!)
I should look into this when quarantine ends.
Some of that pink Depression glass had uranium in them, I don't own any of that but have seen pictures that are very pretty. Its an addictive hobby collecting the stuff, I'm the crazy old dude with a UV flashlight and Geiger counter who combs all the thrift stores and yard sales for stuff.
I suppose I do ...and glass is a weakness for me.. But, itβs being stored in a couple of places pretty far from βme.β Gosh.. passing down radio activity, what a legacy
Does any of your glass glow under UV light? I've come to really love that color. Fortunately the radioactivity is only an issue if you were to scrape glaze or chip glass off and eat it to be in any danger from the radiation! Some of the old uranium bearing orange glazes from 100 years ago are really hot.
These are three of my Fiestaware dishes - and Google on those readings!
@Observer-Effect I don't know about the ultraviolet light. Would have to find a source for that, then dig stuff out of storage.. Only glass β¦ or mostly glass.. Iβll have to warn my kids
