I think they'd have been popular - they made a lot of good, hummable tunes that remain popular fifty years after being published, after all. However, rock and roll was novel and revolutionary then, but it isn't any longer and even their experimental, later music sounds quite staid now - so I don't think they'd be as successful as they were.

@SACatWalker I totally agree.

@SACatWalker But your first sentence, "They didn't just write ditties, they were innovative...", shows that we have very much the same opinion - they wrote some classic pop songs, but they also made some revolutionary, ground-breaking music. I am, and have been since I was a pre-teen, a very big fan of The Beatles.

@SACatWalker It would be very interesting actually to hear what they'd produce if they were indeed around today. Imagine them as they were in the last three years, when they were writing the really ground-breaking stuff, but in a modern studio fully equipped with computers, sequencers, synths, samplers, drum machines etc.

Wow, that's a good question. Since they were the groundbreakers for a number of musical innovations, shall we assume that those innovations never came to light otherwise? If so, I'd say yes.
