It's interesting to consider that it's not just the act itself, which I had always presumed, and may in fact be a chemical reaction. That gives me a more scientific reason to tell people as to why I'm out there playing in the dirt. Although I can't discount the physical activity, either.

That means when I forget to put on my gardening gloves I'll be happier even though my finger nails will be a mess.

Lets just hope there's still some healthy microbes left in people's soil.
