ONLY A REACTIONARY LEADER, NOT PROACTIVE
Pelosi orders removal of Confederate statutes and portraits in Capitol [thehill.com]
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Thursday ordered the removal of four portraits in the Capitol of previous House Speakers who served in the Confederacy.
The move marks Pelosi's latest effort to take down Confederate imagery in the Capitol, following her push last week calling for the removal of 11 Confederate statues displayed in the Capitol complex.
But only after people made noise. This could not be done earlier in the long for 33 years since she has been there since 1987.
What else she could do that she has not yet done?
She will probably do these when there will be new and loud enough outcry in the future. She will not do it until then. She is only reactive.
Congress is already term-limited. Their term is 2 years. Artificial term limits only help corporations who buy and sell politicians.
2 and 3-don't they have to be voted on by members of Congress? Of the 37 years she has been in Congress,how many has she been Speaker?
Without bring a speaker, she could just table a bill which she never did.
@St-Sinner Given the obvious fact neither party would support it, why look like a fool?
@RonWilliam53
You go there as a people's representative with convictions, not do what is easy and convenient. She could at least table a bill like many do.
I need to begin by saying I am all for the Confederate imagery coming down. I'm curious about these portraits and if the people they depict we're house speakers before or after the war. if it were after the war they're removing imagery of someone who had rejoined the Union, even if they were still racist. I guess what I'm thinking is if they took all the pictures of racists from history down they wouldn't have any paintings at all hardly. I understand that the Confederacy is a symbol of slavery, but racism has continued to be a problem since then and not always from Southern politicians.
Three were before the Civil War and one afterwards in the 1890’s. I don’t think it was because they were racist, but were part of the CSA that went to war against the United States.
@Sierra4 Sadly, there were a lot of racists on both sides of the Mason-Dixon for a long time.
@RonWilliam53
Yes, so true. My point was that these four Speakers joined the Confederacy and took up arms against the United States.. If we took down photos of all racists in Congress many pictures if not most would come down. These four former Speakers of the House were taken down because they took up arms against the U.S.
@RonWilliam53 still are lots of racists it seems, maybe not as many but enough to be a menace.
@Sierra4 And I would agree with you. I was trying to say that the treason, not the racism, would be the reason.
