too many in the US wear thier inflated pride and ignorance like an armor against irresponsiblitie's consequenses. US politicians like to tell us to eat our vegetables while handing us pie. we are so consumer oriented people fail to hear the din of rampaging capitalism sucking up the resources in our society. we are so fixated on the idea of being happy we bury ourselves in absurd reasoning that glorifies selfishness and shiny shoes at the expense of our citizenship and even our humanity. as a society we are a ridiculous circus. there are good people around, but there are too many who don't pay attention, and they seem too spread out to create an effective Society. not wearing a mask is the least of our problems, except for those who get sick of course.

@Allamanda we suck. sorry.

@Allamanda if it's any consolation, as strange as it may sound, many in the younger generations, seem to have their heads about them much better than the ones that preceded them.

It’s a very good article in my opinion. There has to be some balance between the saving of lives and long term wellbeing for society. The most important consideration is the future of younger people. Destroy the economy and young people will face a dire future.

The saving of lives at all costs is the wrong approach. You can’t save a life anyway. All you can do is try to extend lives a bit. Do not endanger everyone for the sake of us oldsters who have already lived.

I see that most people in my area are using masks. It’s not because they were ordered to—they wear them out of self-interest and civic duty, and because they were asked nicely by our wonderful governor.

The article touches on the General and correct perception that the experts don’t know what they’re doing and that nature is going to run its course whatever is done.

I think that there is an element of not wanting to be told what to do in the US. People see government as a problem not a solution. This philosophy has been pushed by republicans since Regan. And the damage is done now. It will take a lot to reverse this trend. But the lack of leadership from the top has a lot to do with it as well. The Spanish and the Italians are not renowned for doing what they are told either but the unity of th political class and the information about the pandemic given from the top helped unite people and made them realize that it was not government doing this to them...it was the Virus.

@Allamanda I think that part of there susceptibility to manipulation is that they do not trust Science. So opinions about the pandemic not based in science are more likely to be accepted. This is a country where 40% of people think evolution is not true. Most Republicans wants Creationism to be taught along side evolution in schools as if they are 2 equally valid explanations of why we are here. The war between religion and science that started with Galileo is still being fought in the US. The war is over in Europe. And Science has won

In the UK people generally went fairly well with the government close down orders, but then we expect the same government to look after us.
