Best modern western: "Justified" based on a Elmore Leonard's "Fire in the Hole."
Read the story first.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
(Writer: William Goldman: princess bride, stepford wives,.. )

Unforgiven (All of Clint Eastwood movies. [he is a total waste of skin other than his movies.])

True Grit (2010) excellent adaptation of the book

SILVERADO (1985)

MAVERICK (1994) (Totally silly and fun.) (Writer: William Goldman: All the president's men, papillon,...)

And some of the most difficult to watches:
There Will Be Blood"
DANCES WITH WOLVES (1990)

===
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. 1948

"We don't need no stinkin' badges!"

This is good list. NOTE: it is not in order of tomato ranking:

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry is a novel of the West, one of the best Westerns ever written IMHO, and it was McMurty's best work by far.
