Growing up as a child it was a common event. I associate it with comfort and to this day where ever I am, will sleep like a baby when it is thundering and lightning.

Or better yet, falling asleep to the sound of rain on a corrugated iron roof, with flashes of lightning looming in the window, followed by deep rolling thunder, whilst you are tucked up, snug and warm. Ah! The days of my African childhood!

Nothing puts me into a coma type state of mind like a good thunderstorm. It's almost meditative and calms down the body on so many levels.

I haven't enjoyed rolling thunder in a while. I used to, having lived in the Hudson Valley in NY, which is famous for it's thunderstorms. Right now, I'm sure loving the "peepers" in the nearby pond for falling asleep.

But yes, rolling thunder IS like sky-ZzzQuil.

I remember being the mountains where the sound of rolling thunder echoes off the mountains and merges into the next clap, pretty awesome but not easy to sleep. Much rather listen to the sound of gentle ocean waves lapping on the shore.

I found it almost impossible to sleep listening to a mockingbird, just as I get used to one of their melodies they change the tune which is totally distracting.

Yes, and trains. I grew up going to sleep to the sound of trains.

@ChrissyM Yes, busy city noise bothers me. But I grew up in a small town full of railroad lines. Freight railroad, which usually moved slowly, clanking along. And even the horns, as long as they weren't too close were nice. I lived in L.A. for several years, and depending on where you were, and how well insulated the walls were, noise could bother me. I generally like it quiet.
