This is an extension of an earlier post. For those of you who have read HP Lovecraft, are you able to look past the blatant and sometimes disgusting racism that pervades his writing style?

It was said in Lovecraft's day that Lovecraft's racism even shocked his peers. The racism that pervaded the society of the day is well known, and even by that standard, Lovecraft's peers found his racism to be offensive.

Personally, racism or not, I love his work. But I've met many people who've said that they simply get stuck on the racist portrayals in his short stories. Is there anyone here who's read his work and thinks "Well, yeah, he was a racist asshole, but damn could he write a good story."?

And on the opposite side, who simply can't get past his racism? This is not a judgement, but a question.

Honestly I've read all of his stories and I don't see the racism at all. What I see is somebody writing during the time frame he was in. What we call racism these days was not uncommon at that point. because everything was viewed from a different point of view.

Take for example the movie Blazing Saddles. While it seems like a very racist movie it was done as a period piece. The only people who ever got offended by it are white. I've talked to many different people of many races who ever watch that movie and none of them were offended

I really enjoy Lovecraft's work, and the subsequent "Cthulhu Mythos" genre that has arisen from it. But his racism and xenophobia are really disgusting.

The two aren't entirely unrelated. His horror is always about "outsiders" (from space, or from another dimension, or cultists from "savage" races) destroying the (white, European) civilization.

That aspect of his work is repulsive. But inventing the genre of cosmic horror was a huge step towards modernity in fiction.
