Today I was walking my dog at the cemetery across the street, and there was a graveside service going on. A large group of people standing around the grave being preached at for a solid hour. I hate being preached at when I go to a funeral. I understand saying a few words, and it being religious in nature if that person was a believer, but preaching a long sermon--no.
Did your dog piss on the gravestone?
Seriously though, yes, an hour service, especially graveside, strikes me as quite self-indulgent on the part of the presiding clergy. Dispensing any real empathy and comfort doesn't need to take that much time. Especially when extended family probably do more for each other at the reception anyway.
