ON NPR TODAY.... "Ohio City Temporarily Gets Into The Food Delivery Business" [npr.org]

Beachwood, Ohio, is among a few municipalities providing free food delivery to city residents. It's the city's version of economic development for its restaurants during the pandemic.

Here is the gist of the business model. Some details are collected from outside the NPR show:

  1. Beachwood, Ohio city government of just ,000 residents has hired delivery drivers who will do restaurant food delivery to city residents free of delivery charges
  2. It will serve multiple goals - keep restaurant business alive, prospering and tax revenue generating, generate employment, avoid high delivery charge cost from Uber Eats, Door Dash and maintain health and safety social practices of residents etc.
  3. Restaurant owners in Beachwood said the delivery charges from Door Dash and the likes is as high as 30% of the food bill. They are very happy to save these costs and still receive and fulfill food orders
  4. With the pandemic, food and grocery delivery trend is here to stay
  5. City's cost of the drivers' salaries will be recouped with the higher tax revenue and city's financial stability

The people in public service in Beachwood, Ohio should be commended for this innovative thinking. Looks like a win-win for business and restaurants in the city.
