I'm stealing this for my computer group.
GNU is actually what most people call Linux. Linux itself is a monolithic Kernel written by Linus Torvalds. Richard Stallman and The Free Software Foundation came up with GNU. They weren't suscessfull because they split it into several modules and could not get it to work (at least to the best of my understanding).
