How many auto electricians believe that the points capacitor is provided to suppress points burnout?

As per usual, the writers of auto-ignition systems make the same mistake regarding the purpose of the points capacitor. Its main purpose, is to provide a path for the rapid collapse of the back EMF from the collapsing field. By providing a capacitor this enables the current to find a path to be quickly absorbed....... One rule of induction is, that the faster the field collapses the higher the output voltage will be, the main purpose of the capacitor is to quickly assist in the field's collapse. The fact that this capacitor also happens to reduce the erosion of the points is just a lucky coincidence. Remove the capacitor and the ignition fails to provide sufficient spark to run the engine.

It will operate so sluggishly that the field collapse has no time to restore the inductive field to sufficient level to produce the spark, and the motor will barely run at all, but will only respond to an idling speed to match the inability of the fly-back system to provide it's peak reset level for the next full cycle.
