Many prominent atheists such as Hitchens indicated that the most rational or thought provoking argument from the pious is the fine tuning argument. What do you think of this argument, and how do you fromulate a counter argument?
I find the Fine Tuning argument as absurd as the burning bush. Just because things are calibrated to an exquisite degree and we have the imagination or science to explain something, does not in any way mean that making up a story about a creator god having fashioned the universe, is any more valid than making up a god driving a chariot across the sky to explain the course of the sun.
I am not familiar with the "fine tuning" argument. Could you explain please?
Well one would offend say if the earth was 5 feet closer to the sun we would burn up or freeze if 5 feet farther away.
Well here the problem the earth orbit isnt a circle but more egg shaped.
The distance varies in thousands of miles during it yearly rotation around the sun so it make there fine tuning false
This is an argument that presumes 1. that things COULD have been any other way; 2. that there is any significant reason (or that our existence is significant in the universe) for things to exist the way that they are; 3. that things couldn't be better IF things could be different. Things are how they are, and with such a massive universe full of so many chaotic elements it should not be so perplexing that in some places the blocks fell in ways that resulted in complex mechanisms. Perhaps if things had been drastically different in the universe then there would have been completely different complex mechanisms which would ponder with one another that no other universe could have brought about life.
You nailed it. It is the way it is and saying after the fact that because it is this way we are justified to conclude an all powerful designer and to add to that they think they know it's their personal designer. Unfortunately this is compelling to people who lack the ability to grasp the fallacy in that statement.
