Dear members. Regarding polls.
I am aware that members here are generally kind, helpful, and willing to cooperate with others studies and needs. Yet sadly I feel, it is needful to raise the odd note of caution, especially if you are new here, on the subject of polls and surveys.

It is best to remember that this is an open site which anyone can use to post a poll, and that many people in this world will have hidden agendas, or may not be who they pretend to be. Therefore before you tick boxes, or give answers, I think that it is a good idea to apply an odd precaution, if you don't want your help to be misused and misrepresented, in ways that you would not like. Fortunately as you know, there are a few very easy ways to spot a doubtful questionnaire, but just to reiterate.

As always, do read the questions carefully, (you know that anyway).

Beware of polls, where you can not see all the questions before you start.

Read the questions through before you start to answer, step back for a second, and ask yourself if you can spot a hidden agenda or bias in the way the questions are ordered or phrased.

Make sure that all valid questions are asked, and that all honest replies are available to give. For example. ( Do you believe drugs should be unregulated ? Do you believe drugs should be regulated much more heavily ? Do you believe people should not be given drugs? ) You will easily see the trick in those three questions if you notice that. Do you believe in moderate controls on drugs ? Was left out.

Always ask yourself if any single questions and answers, or groups, could be taken out of the whole and used alone to present a false outcome.

There is probably no great harm going to come to anyone, even if you go wild and tick every box you see, but it can be annoying to see peoples helpfulness abused. Enjoy.

I’d never really given it any thought, so thank you for posting: Forewarned is forearmed.

I have a different question.

Should we continue participating for free?

Everybody else in the process gets paid, the pollster, their customers, polling staff of pollsters, mailers, artists, webmasters etc. Why should we give input for free and why is our time and effort taken for granted? They can figure ways to pick participants at random, do anything else to keep the poll unbiased, untainted.

I agree. Many polls on here are like "Do you still starve your puppy?" I don't answer polls like that and I call out the author.

And as I've learned recently, there are some (who I will not name, but who should be ashamed) who use this site and the other members here for "research", without asking informed consent, which is a primary rule in research ethics. Merely answering a poll doesn't give consent to take part in a "research" study or to have your replies quoted. Specifically, there is a member (at least one) who deliberately sets out trolling posts stating things they themselves don't even believe, to "test" whether atheists are objective, etc., then takes the responses as "proof" of their predetermined opinion.
