I'm white and, please, lay some privilege on me! I'll take it!

White Privilege is a misnomer. Have you ever had the crap kicked out of you by a cop?

@barjoe No.
Have SOME white people?
Yes.
Have SOME black people NOT?
Yes.
Is there some other factor(s) at play here?
As usual, it's not that simple. In fact, it's extremely complicated.

@Storm1752 Have you? White privilege doesn't mean whites have privilege backgrounds. It means blacks whether they were born to privilege or not are profiled. They are scrutinized when shopping, when applying for a loan and when interacting with law enforcement. White people get the benefit of a doubt. That is called white privilege. It may be a poor choice of words but it is a real thing.

@barjoe Okay, so George Zimmerman 'profiled' a black kid in a hoodie sneaking around peering into windows in an apartment complex wherein lots of breaking and enterings were occuring. Was Treyvon Martin being victimized, or did Zimmerman have good reason to believe Martin was casing the place? Especially since Martin seemed to have no fixed destination?
I ask you: was this an example of 'anti-privilege,' or just common sense?
'Profiling' to one person is 'duh' to someone else.
P.S. Unlike most people who weigh in on this, I actually watched the whole trial.

@Storm1752 If it had been a white kid that wouldn't have happened and if it did George Zimmerman's would be in prison. If it had been a black man who murdered a 15 year old white kid, he'd have gotten his lethal injection by now. Duh must be something you say naturally.

@barjoe But it WASN'T a white kid who was furtively skulking around in the middle of the night. And Treyvon Martin WAS casing the place for a likely breaking and entering opportunity. And when challenged there WAS a struggle for Zimmerman's gun, resulting in the fatal shot.
DUH.
Lots of times there's a good reason for 'profiling.'
A Muslim in an airport sporting an oversized bag is another good example. Not that most terrorists would be THAT stupid.
There are always going to be rogue cops undeserving of the badge, but is every instance an excuse for a race riot?
Sometimes I think some white people are so intent on being 'correct' they're afraid of being right.
Of COURSE slavery and it's aftermath was wrong, but that doesn't mean EVERYTHING white people do is wrong.
In fact I'd venture I'm as sensible as you are. But I'm not stupid.
I'm not 'privileged' no matter how many times you say it.

@Storm1752 No proof of what your saying. You think what you want to think. You can't help yourself. You must have been raised that way. You do say Duh a lot.

@barjoe Not really. I just don't like people saying I'm 'privileged' just because I'm white. That's just not true.
And we're all n-gg-rs whether you choose to accept that or not.
It's really a class and economic war, with race beside the point for most of us.

@Storm1752 hijo You already said you sympathize with George Zimmerman. You probably side with Derek Chauvin and Kyle Rittenhouse as well. I choose not to accept anything you say, including duh.

@barjoe I'm not ideological.
Goodnight, sir. May the wind be always at your back.

@Storm1752 jeebus Storm, the penalty for "peeping" is Death? Since when?

@AnneWimsey Anne, he wasn't killed, he died over a struggle on the ground for George's gun.
The point there was 'profiling' isn't necessarily racist, that lots of times it makes perfect sense.

@Storm1752 so you are saying the cops Should be judge, jury & Executioner in some cases?
And just BTW is there video evidence of this struggle? Or is it more like the bullet holes are in the back "he was aggressive" defense

@AnneWimsey Yes there was an AUDIO recording of the struggle, an eyewitness account, other forensic evidence.
By the way, if I'm 'sympathizing' with George Zimmerman, it's only because I think he was tried and convicted by the public (ESPECIALLY blacks) when most if not all the evidence pointed to acquittal..
It's also because though some rogue cops ARE guilty of these kinds of crimes, I think it's dangerous for law enforcement to so badly lose respect and authority. What's next? Only black cops can arrest black people, or it's automatically a case of police brutality and/or murder?
The issue of 'white privilege' somehow got lost here. I think a lot of whites are fair-minded and are trying to do the right thing, but are more and more resentful they are themselves being stereotyped. It won't be long whites will be in the minority, and then we'll see how 'fair-minded' Hispanics and blacks will be.
But I'll hopefully be long gone before that happens.

Those people deplore him too. The term white privilege, can be taken to imply that all white people are from privilege background. Most are not. Whites are immune to implied bias against people of color, by police and others. That is their privilege. Gladwell although he identifies as a person of color is a benefit of privilege himself.
