A little bit of New York history: work on the Erie Canal ( also called Clinton's Ditch) began in Rome, NY in 1817. It changed a lot of environments in its construction, creating wetlands where none existed before.
Both of my daughters learned fishing at the Canal but we would not dare eat any of the fish.
