Why do I find people who believe in the bible so unattractive?
Because you’re attracted to intelligence? I’ve met many intelligent theists. Perhaps it’s that you can’t stand voluntary self delusion?
I can't answer for you, but I find most bible thumpers to be deeply hypocritical. And I am especially sensitive to hypocrisy. With a few exceptions, I find religious people to be judgemental, racist, zenaphobic, homopobic and controlling. The only religious thing about them is their rhetoric. Look at Congress: no money for social programs for the poor, the sick, or the aged but a blank check for billionaires and the military industrial complex. sigh
So very agree!
I said most.
You are not alone. I don't really care about someone's religious beliefs. but I don't think spowting off have them is going to win anyone over.
On my Facebook wall, I had to post the following, after a couple of people went off on preachy rants in comments to one of my postings:
Guys and Gals - I sincerely appreciate your comments on my posts. My fb Friends are some of the most intelligent folks around. With that in mind, I'd like to request that there be no more proselytizing, preaching, etc. of your religious beliefs on my Timeline. You guys have your own Timeline where you can preach all you like. Thank you!
And after contentious comments on that post (!!) I posted this:
Mutual respect, folks! That's all I'm asking for. You don't rant or preach on my Timeline; I don't rant or preach on yours. Plain and simple!
(with a meme saying "NO PROSELYTIZING!"
I feel the same someone trying to shove whatever religion down my
Throat is a massive turn off
I would like to answer why you ...might....or do...find people who believe in the Bible so unattractive.
Since I feel the same way first let me say why I do. Often they are full of themselves, pompous, audacious in the way they think they are so important in the Universe that a personal God loves just them personally and will send others who do not believe in their...Bible (Koine Greek for Book), the Bible, the compilation of Jewish and non Jewish writings or speculations or poetry or flawed history that has been made up in those minds of the...believers in the bible to be the perfect words of God spoken directly to them, thus they think they, in their head are speaking to the master of the Universe which makes me feel like they are very naive people.
Maybe you are getting that vibe as you seem very intelligent. The vibe that they are pompous and full of self pride (the wrong type of pride) and that they also think they are so important and that means they are trying, in their whole entire life to put others down if others do not think the same way. THUS to me it is simple tribalism for US to think badly of them because they are like in a tribe of people that think they can do anything once directed in their own mind by their fake God and it is thence justified.
If you have a head for understanding people, you then get the re flux feeling or a sickening, maybe angry feeling that they are somehow off in their....brain.
The good news is that your radar is working well and they are off their rockers, yet in my life I try very hard to speak to them as kindly as I can and also when needed I can speak harshly if they need to hear something when they have offended me.
A balancing act for sure and I also feel the same. I find them unattractive because in my life I do not see people as outwardly attractive nearly as much as I do inwardly. Maybe that is why I view them or ...better stated, feel a vibe of almost anger and not because I am afraid they are right yet because I know they are either naive or indoctrinated, full of self pride or self loathing to need some blood sacrifice to save them and again audacious that they think some deity would have to bleed and suffer to save them which is a paradox because why would a deity so powerful have to make up some schism like that? Your radar toward them being actually crazy in a way is good.
I say....good for you that you can feel that and you do not seem to be angry, but attraction is another whole thing than being angry! I wish you peace Chirpy.
Remember that part of their believing is the cognitive dissonance and compartmentalization things that are going on in the brain. I still know a mathematics professor that is the head of the graduate program at his U. that still attends a chuch that believes that Noah was floating arround about 4300 years ago.
Doctor of anthropology Val Curtis has spent her career studying the emotion of disgust. In fact she calls herself a 'disgustologist'. Dr, Curtis argues that disgust is very similar to fear, in that it helps us avoid things our evolutionary nature tells us to be wary of. It's a defence mechanism. She explains it thus:
"Disgust is an organ – like an eye or an ear. It has a purpose, it's there for a reason. Just like a leg gets you from A to B, disgust tells you which things you are safe to pick up and which things you shouldn't touch. Disease is something that will eat us up from inside – and what's important is that disgust keeps you away from them."
The word 'disease' comes from old French and literally means 'lack of ease'. Disgust is a handy mechanism for avoiding harm. It may not be right all the time but, just like with fear, if we avoid things we are disgusted by they can never harm us. It's a numbers game.
It's important to say that our instincts are not always right. As thinking creatures, we can acknowledge our emotions and hormonal discharges when they pop up. We can ask ourselves if it really is our own disgust 'talking', or is it a disgust that somebody else has put in our heads? The fear of the 'other' is a very real human phenomenon and allows people with their own agendas to manipulate other people in to doing very bad things on their behalf. Disgust is involved in that process, a process which can be seen every day when we turn on the television, go online or read the newspapers. I guess the whole point of this place is about questioning dogma, but there's one line that is always worth remembering for me: "Do to others what you would have them do to you."
I'm going to research her work now. Thanks for your post.
That's because they are unattractive trolls. Lol just kidding. Actually, no, I'm not kidding. I can't stand most of them and the poison their dumbasses spread. Lives and loving homes are ripped apart because of this stupid garbage.
Amen! oops.
I find that many of them have a narrow area in which they can converse and they have to constantly remind themselves and me that they are believers. Others are not so bad. The worst in this regard in my experience are the born again evangelicals and the worst of them are the new converts who can't seem to go more than five minutes without mentioning their imaginary friend in the sky. That is a definite turn off for me.
Where I live this is a major problem when it comes to social contacts.
In my case, it's because gullibility is unattractive. I don't believe Hobbits are real because I read The Fellowship of the Ring.
Probably simple association. I don't think it's a stretch to assume that a lot of the people on this site have a less than favorable opinion of religion. Ergo, if you aren't a big fan of religion, you might have a negative bias as to those who are.
That isn't to say it's bad. Well actually we should judge people person to person rather than paint in broad strokes, but it's not the worst thing you can do. I usually think of it like people with music choices. Not that into country, so dating someone who is usually has a few hurdles.
I believe in the Bible. I believe the Bible exists. Anything after that, I'm not so sure....
Because when they speak of their religious mess, the pungent, offensive odor of their neuro-flatulence invades an otherwise pleasant space.
Well.... ok.... I got a different answer. I don't find all those people unattractive. I have a motto of live and let live. I find all people differant In all sorts of ways, but I choose to allow them to beleive in what works for them. I call this balance. It works for me so I want be to judgemental. Sometimes i appear to be. I find myself irritable to others for my own beliefs even within this forums. Im sure i piss them off even though I'm agnostic.
The bible is a fictional book full of made up stories. It's unattractive to believe in that and use it as a crutch. Religion is a crutch for the weak-minded. It's funny, they know Harry Potter is fictional, but not the bible.
Because @Coolkoolguy is as intelligent as they get
I have seen people discuss things here and disagree. We have talked about politics and sex and religion and I haven't seen real insults until now. It's highly unattractive. So I don't think it's ironic, per se, but definitely a verbal barb of some sort, but the word for the precise type escapes me in this early hour.
