Having just used this link in a response I think that this 63 year old recording should gain greater exposure.
The Bricklayer's Lament - by Gerard Hoffnung

From Gerard Hoffnung's 1958 Oxford Address.

Hoffnung, a cartoonist, tubist, impresario, broadcaster and public speaker was aged just 33 at the time of this performance. Unfortunately he died of a brain haemorrhage the following year.

I thought it was older than it is. Thank you. You have great taste in folk music.

Thank you. I've messaged you on the subject of folk music.
As for Hoffnung's monologue, I haven't researched it to ascertain if his is the original or simply a retelling of an earlier work. I recall that a number of folkies including, I think, the Dubliners or Clancy Bros. from Ireland, the McCalmans & The Corries from Scotland also performed versions in the 60's & 70's.

Have heard that one by other artists, but that is the first time I heard that performance. Always funny.

I suspect that it may have been the start of all others made after 1960.
