The Hate You Give. As in, THUG LIFE: The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody. I expect that's true, and it's a good film. Tough-minded for the most part, with great performances, especially from Amandla Stenberg as Starr, the teenaged protagonist. (And I love me some Regina Hall. See also Support the Girls.) I'm not too sure about making a guy from the hood one of the villains when it's supposed to be a film about police violence against the community. A touch of both-sidesism? Maybe. Also it sort of libs out at the end when the cops suddenly change their trigger-happy ways as a matter of conscience and conveniently arrest the aforementioned neighborhood villain. Then again, if Maverick or someone had taken him out, maybe that would have been a too-typical action-picture ending. Maybe.
