(A part of me can't believe politics has sunk to a point where sexuality in cartoons is an issue.)
Social media users are revisiting the controversial history of Bugs Bunny cartoons after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis claimed that Disney is pushing for certain topics in its cartoons.
"One of the things that really bugged me were these Zoom videos with all these people that are high up in Disney, talking about how there was intention to inject sexuality into the programming for these very young kids," he said on Wednesday during a campaign event for Republican U.S. Senate candidate Adam Laxalt in Nevada, according to The Recount.
He continued: "When we were young, you can watch cartoons without having to worry, now parents have to sit there and worry about what are they trying to inject in? What type of ideology are they trying to pursue? And that is wrong."
Though DeSantis didn't specifically name Bugs Bunny during his remarks, some individuals online responded to his comments by using the cartoon character as an example to show that sexuality was addressed in old cartoons.
One of my favorite Foghorn Leghorn lines is about the old Hen who was always chasing him. "That woman is like a stretch of road between Ft Worth and Dallas. No curves." WB cartoons were made for adults but it turned out kids liked them. They didn't understand them but they primed us for real human life. In this way Ron is not wrong. What is wrong is their fear of sexuality. Sex, in their mind, is a tool used by Satan to draw souls away from God so, once again, dogmatic religion is the real problem.
Dems, IMO, need to stop chasing the divisions and attack the big monster. I think we are at a time when it is weak and susceptible to becoming weaker. That is, it would define us against them and accomplish big changes if it works. If it doesn't work then we weren't savable, anyhoo.
