I don't know if you get it, but this is a typical English way of showing sympathy for the misfortunes of others.
Background: Lou broke her foot. She parked her car in her rather steep driveway. She got out of the car without the handbrake on. The car started moving, running over her foot and crashed into the gate. She was supposed to meet her friends/coworkers a few days later but now she couldn't.
Matt: Lou, Only learned about your mishap today - difficult to get the details as Wakeling was laughing so much, but sounds like a bit of a bugger. Trust you are making the most of your lack of mobility and that Gren (Lou's husband) is waiting on you and answering your every need. Hope the recovery goes well, look forward to seeing you back in harness soonest.
Dave (Wakeling): It was him wot was laughing Lou, not me. I explained how it could have been more serious which just caused him further mirth. All he wanted to do was reconstruct the incident: you were going to be you, I was going to be the car, he was going to be the gate and Tom was going to video it all. How sick is that?
In a show of solidarity with you and your foot, we decided not to have an ice cream but to wait until you got back so that you could buy the first of the season. Shows of camaraderie like that are rare these days.
We did miss you so hope your foot gets better soon.
(Lou was not at all offended by these messages; she found it hilarious. )
