So, I want to know why the majority of substance abuse rehabilitation is faith based. We are taking already vulnerable individuals and asking them to put their hope in a suspect being. Shouldn't we instead teach them to rely on themselves?

It is human nature to turn to something greater than ourselves when we seek extraordinary strength or power.
Drug and alchol abuse tend to undermine the self. Self confidence, self reliance, belief in one self all degrade.
A "higher power" can give a weakened person a sense of strenght.

I think it would be better to teach addicts to rely on social supports of family and friends rather than an imaginary celestial dictator.

Narcotics Anonymous states that you only need a higher power and/or meditation. It could be anything as long as it's loving and caring. Addicts are self center when using and when they first get into recovery. The higher power is used to change the mindset of the addict. I prefer mediation, but philosophy is my higher power.

"the majority of substance abuse rehabilitation is faith based". Is it? Where are you getting this from?

You mean like. I was high drugs and now I am high on Jesus. Then fall back into drugs again.

Are your stats based more in Religious countries compared to predominate non believers countries worldwide ?
