Under the Tuscan Sun. An utterly conventional rom-com, but the scenery looks terrific and so does Diane Lane. It does partake of the chickenshittery about nudity that has become standard for Hollywood films, i.e. women have a peculiar habit of leaving their brassieres on during supposedly passionate sex. Not very realistic. Neither is the film, but the bedroom is one place where you could inject (no pun intended) a little realism into things without going over budget or compromising the narrative flow. I think the prudishness is part of a power game that goes on between U.S. actresses and their directors, although in this case the director was female and I'm guessing there wasn't much of a conflict between her and the actresses. I'm assuming the director was straight; gay female directors these days don't seem to have any objection to female nudity onscreen. Someone on Rotten Tomatoes called the film a yuppie comedy or something like that. That's about right, even if it's yuppyism apres la lettre. Anyway...not too terrible a way to spend two hours, but I probably wouldn't watch it again.

The film may have very well avoided nudity in order to maintain a PG-13 rating.

Also, not everyone is comfortable with being naked on film. Actors/actresses are often brutally scrutinized about their appearance, especially women and especially middle-aged women.

My thoughts had to do with realism, not comfort. The film does have a PG13 rating, so you may have a point there.
