I heard that watching Alien was great when it first came out and everything was a surprise. No one knew who was going to make it through. I saw Aliens first and always liked it more.

Alien scared the living shit out of me. I will never forget the first time I watched it. Aliens, on the other hand, was a complete blast. I don't know if those cans of nerve gas would have worked, but I think Hicks was right about it. Nuke the site from orbit - it's the only way to be sure.
A lot of people say the sequels were not very good. They're wrong: Aliens was an excellent film, and the sequels ranged from very good to good, but none of them should be compared to Alien which is an absolutely first-rate film, among the greatest horrors ever made.
(Note: I consider Alien to be gothic horror more than sci-fi).

Agreed - Alien is a horror film. Aliens is an action film. Same universe, different genres.
