Teachers in Florida have removed books from their classrooms or wrapped their bookshelves in paper so that students can't access them in order to avoid being charged with a felony—up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine—simply for providing students books that Ron DeSantis and his supporters find offensive.

Nice and subjective so they can be sure to crucify someone. The beginning of a reign of terror.

By "subjective," I assume you're referring to the DeSantis regime, right? But yes, very clearly he's on fascist path of building power.

@mischl Right. DeSantis will gin up a crisis one way or another. I see him as the greatest danger of my lifetime.

@alliwant Yes, a lot of people agree with you on that point.

Warning! Warning! DeathSantis is dangerous for Florida and the country.

He's out in the open with fascist moves, trying outdo 45.

@mischl Yep. The Anti-Woke BS rhetoric is bullshit and just another form of "Own the Libs". Earlier he was being marketed as Trump Lite, again bullshit as he is far more dangerous. If we had better education the masses might know that there is a difference between communism and socialism and that fascism never ends well. I am not holding my breath for more than one or two percent of US voters recognizing that our slide into neo-liberalism has trashed the Middle Class, ended the American Dream, and will make this planet uninhabitable in the near future.

@MizJ Yes, well said, Ms. Julie.

If DeSantis gets elected president he'll ramp up his hate-induced war against freedom of speech/expression, LGBT+ community, black people, women, and history.

I think you are correct. And the religious right will help make it happen.

He doesn;t give a shit about any of the issues you mentioned except for the fact that they get him brownie points with the far Right and thus closer to the White House

Considering the fact that DeSantis was recently overwhelmingly reelected, it is obvious that many more than just DeSantis himself find issues with the books in question.

It's not about the books, it's about Owning the Libs, pandering to the religious Right, outdoing 45, airtime on Faux News, etc. The goal is the White House.

Sadly when you have only a two party state, then people are forced to vote for a package, regardless of many of the policies which that may include.

@MizJ According to you. I doubt you have ever even seen the books in question.

@Fernapple You are correct and unfortunately both major political parties in the U.S. leave much to desire.

@Alienbeing I have hundreds of books and as a library volunteer saw more titles than most will ever see. Your attempts at insulting me are highly entertaining. Please, carry on!

@MizJ Are the books in qustion in your library?

Last, what "attempt"to inslut you did you see? I see none. I was and still am questioning whether or not actually read any part of the books in question.

@Fernapple We have more than two parties but only the two major ones have any dollars behind them. This issue was made even worse with a disastrous decision by the US Supreme Court that allows political action committees (PACs) to sidestep campaign finance laws. The reasoning is that the PACs are independent, separate entities from the candidate and their official campaign. It's a blueprint for corruption.

@MizJ We are very much the same in the UK, there are a lot of parties, but only two are really important, due in part to fear. That almost always happens when you have a very simple first past the post, non proportional system. Fortunately though, the laws on campaign spending here, are quite strong and reasonably well enforced.

@MizJ It seems you did not read any part of the books you criticized.

@Alienbeing Au contraire, I have at least read Toni Morrison and it's in my library. I did not criticize the books, I criticized the banning of those books.

@MizJ So all books are oK in School libraries?
