This is a satirical entry in the "Devil's Dictionary" by Ambrose Bierce. (1880s) It illustrates that the historical ambiguity of our Constitution and democratic system is nothing new.


"Executive, n. An officer of the government, whose duty it is to enforce the wishes of the legislative power until such time as the judicial shall be pleased to pronounce them invalid and of no effect."

I think they call it separation of powers. Add in federalism where power devolves to the states (10th amendment). Then the states have their own separation of powers.
