Maybe, maybe not. It's an intriguing question.

Any living cell has built in responses to the environment. As soon as they group together, their responses become coordinated. It's the beginning of sentience, which becomes progressively greater with greater complexity. It is indeed a form of consciousness. Certain animals have developed powerful sentience as a survival technique.

It is intriguing, I'd read/heard about the connected root systems, that makes she groves into (basically) a single organism. These could be the oldest life on land. So much we don't know yet, ...
Sigh, I wanna know...

... and there are also mycelia, which can interact.
(just watched the video. Fungi, that other great branch of life, do indeed pitch in.)
