Just a thought, but Russia's invasion of Ukraine may in the long term be beneficial to the world.
Why? Because with higher oil prices and Russia "blackmailing" the West over energy supplies, (aided by opportunistic curtailing of production by OPEC countries.) far more attention and funding will be paid to alternative energy sources, including nuclear fusion.
Imagine a world where OPEC is as insignificant as the flat earth society.
I don't think there's any positivity in the Russian invasion except for the world unified against Putin.
The world is not unified against Putin. China, India, South-Africa, Iran, and a dozen more smaller countries are more or less on his side. Here in Europe he can count on Hungary's Orban
If the threat of climate change is not enough to make us abandon fossil fuels, higher oil prices won't do the job either. The world has already seen higher oil prices, but the cars are getting bigger and bigger.
(Nuclear fusion is believing in magic; it won't save us)
Cars suddenly became far more fuel efficient in the 70s, after fuel prices rose dramatically.
Fusion is not the ONLY alternative.
Also, your thinking is confined to cars, which only account for a quarter of world oil consumption.
@Petter That's called "rebound effect": motors have become more efficient in the last decades, but all this gain of efficiency has been wasted because cars got bigger, motors got more power... no net benefit. The same with air traffic: engines are more efficient, flying became less expensive, people fly more often.... no net benefit regarding energy consumption
