I would not use the word consciousness. The word "knows" is rather synonymous with consciousness. For something to have consciousness would give for it to have capabilities to know something. For something to know something, even if it only knows on a minute scale, it would imply it has some form of consciousness.

But, would say, understanding physics, a material thing, has a force capable of occupying a volume of space.

Thus, I would say, something materal "knows" at minimum how to occupy that volume of space with it's force capabilities.
