Dissolving in the Oceans: As the oceans formed, carbon dioxide dissolved to form soluble carbonate compounds, so its amount in the atmosphere decreased.

Use by Plants for Photosynthesis: Plants use carbon dioxide for photosynthesis, which also contributed to the decrease in CO2 levels.

Formation of Fossil Fuels: When plants died, their carbon compounds became locked up underground, forming fossil fuels

And the warming of the planet includes the warming of the oceans. Most of the increased warming has been absorbed by the oceans. In fact, about 90% of global warming is absorbed by the oceans. This absorption of heat has been happening since modern recordkeeping began in 1955. The top few meters of the ocean store as much heat as Earth’s entire atmosphere. The effects of ocean warming include sea level rise due to thermal expansion, coral bleaching, accelerated melting of Earth’s major ice sheets, intensified hurricanes, and changes in ocean health and biochemistry. It’s important to note that the ocean’s ability to absorb heat plays a crucial role in balancing the excess heat from rising global temperature.

Greenhouse Effect: CO2 and other greenhouse gases trap some of the heat that Earth might have otherwise radiated out into space. When sunlight reaches Earth, the surface absorbs some of the light’s energy and reradiates it as infrared waves, which we feel as heat. These infrared waves travel up into the atmosphere and will escape back into space if unimpeded1. However, CO2 absorbs energy at a variety of wavelengths that overlap with that of infrared energy. As CO2 soaks up this infrared energy, it vibrates and re-emits the infrared energy back in all directions1. About half of that energy goes out into space, and about half of it returns to Earth as heat, contributing to the ‘greenhouse effect’.

Human Activities: Each year, human activities release more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than natural processes can remove, causing the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere to increase. The annual rate of increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide over the past 60 years is about 100 times faster than previous natural increases. Carbon dioxide concentrations are rising mostly because of the fossil fuels that people are burning for energy. Human activities have raised the atmosphere’s carbon dioxide content by 50% in less than 200 years, causing the earth’s temperature to rise.

Water Vapor Feedback: As carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases heat up the planet, more water evaporates into the atmosphere, which in turn raises the temperature further.

In summary, the increase in CO2 in the atmosphere, primarily due to human activities, traps more heat, leading to global warming and climate change.
