I've always thought the whole Seventies singer-songwriter thing was largely a matter of pampered young women singing about their fathers. I don't know why I never thought of this before, but it strikes me now that Hall and Oates's "Rich Girl" was likely an answer song to that Carly Simon number about her dad smoking cigarettes in the dark.
