On testing a vegan versus omnivorous diet with identical twins. You may have seen mention of this in mainstream media, with the usual misleading headlines and fail to do even a cursory review of the methodology/
As is always the case (I haven't seen any exceptions, and I geek out on this stuff) the zealotry behind veganism is based on flawed science and ideology. As Dr. Attia puts it in the headline of this article, the study fails Science 101.
I have an identical twin, while we are 180 out on religion, politics and TV/internet viewing choices neither one of us are vegan or vegetarian.
My ex was vegetarian, no meat, chicken or fish. He just did not like the taste or how those protein sources made him feel. He was also proof you don't need those protein sources to get cut when weight lifting - WOW!
I tried, I really did, to go vegetarian. Two months in and I'm dreaming of hamburgers and I feel crappy! I caved and made a roast chicken meal for me and a vegetarian chili for him.
I felt great and he was happy. Since I was not a big fan of bacon it was no hardship to forgo bacon, he really hated the smell of it cooking.
I think everyone should try an elimination diet, just to see how certain foods make you feel. I use to love rice but I found I feel unwell in a way I can't describe other than unwell, so I don't eat it.
I love shellfish but again I feel unwell and an allergy test show I really should not eat shellfish, the reaction was high enough the doctor warned me it could cause an anaphylactic reaction.
I can't see how an 8 week study is going to tell you anything meaningful, I agree, this is a publicity stunt, not science.
I agree...all my life I have noted that if you take any OTC supplements or whatever you need to give them At Least 8 weeks to know whether they are doing anything at all, so an 8-week food study would be useless at best.
@annewimsey500 Human dietary studies are crippled by the fact that you can't do studies. You can't take a bunch of people and control their diets rigidly for years or decades. So all long term studies are based on subjects who are both self selecting and self reporting. Still, nutrition science is pretty clear: Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, but some grain and meat is essential too. We're high end monkeys, one of our huge evolutionary advantages is we can eat a wide variety of food sources. Panda and Koala Bear diets are for Pandas and Koala Bears.
