Not so sure about that. Churches #1 are about local community. Before this instant communication world it was the only place, besides pubs, where people met, socialised and got the "goss" or news. I dare say many a revolution was fermented with the knowledge and "blessings" of local religious figures.

This notorious Catholic understood this concept very well: "FOR HOW SHALL WE FILL PEOPLE WITH BLIND FAITH in the correctness of a doctrine, if we ourselves spread uncertainty and doubt by constant changes in its outward structure?
