So the UK government is trying to get more control by improving the definition of extremism.
I would like to point out that Science has had a lot of experience of formulating, testing and changing definitions where necessary to delve further into the depths of knowledge and behavior. Like all scientific investigations the processes are a mixture of the 2 S's - Systematic and Serendipity [the luck of chaos]
Here are a few tips
1.Systematic is about trying methods of other people . Unfortunately here are far too many definitions about the same thing and a lot need culling.
2.Increasing your chances on Serendipity would mean asking many many more people. I hope they (the UK government) consult much wider than the cabinet
3. Definitions are a big help to "free speech"
4.Don't trust just one definition [ Say your favorite dictionary] Keep searching for the widest truth.]/Keep searching -it helps negotiation.
5. If you do not sort out definitions before you start a discussion , you risk wasting an extremely large amount of time.
6. If you want to sort out which is the best religion or belief make sure the ' Elders ' of that religion or belief sort out their ' Tenants of belief '{ core principles of a religion} to eliminate unnecessary ones e.g hair coverings for females in Islam.
7. People can fight for centuries over the importance of ONE word whereas a compromise between two words wound have solved the problem instantly.
This government review seems to be for the purpose of refining police guidelines and crowed control. And likely other purposes. Is there anyway Suella Braverman and ilk remain an influence here. Her part of the right wing would love stronger policing powers to restrict demonstrations in light of the publics disgust of the freedom allowed the Israelis to do whatever they wish in Gaza.
I think smart people with common sense "mostly" know what extremism looks like. It being a state of mind and emotion. It's hard to gage someone's emotion which tends to wax and wane. I suppose extremism is someone who is always riled up and obsessed. Using hate filled speech could be a form of extremism but only if it is apparent someone is going to act on the issue. Also anyone recruiting others with hate filled speech in my mind is an extremist.
