I had never heard of this story before today. Judges 9:8-15 where the trees hold a council to appoint a king of the trees.. how did I ever believe this bullshit

8One day the trees went out to anoint a king for themselves. They said to the olive tree, ‘Be our king.’

9“But the olive tree answered, ‘Should I give up my oil, by which both gods and humans are honored, to hold sway over the trees?’

10“Next, the trees said to the fig tree, ‘Come and be our king.’

11“But the fig tree replied, ‘Should I give up my fruit, so good and sweet, to hold sway over the trees?’

12“Then the trees said to the vine, ‘Come and be our king.’

13“But the vine answered, ‘Should I give up my wine, which cheers both gods and humans, to hold sway over the trees?’

14“Finally all the trees said to the thornbush, ‘Come and be our king.’

15“The thornbush said to the trees, ‘If you really want to anoint me king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, then let fire come out of the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’

It is a parable or fable spoken by Jotham meant to remind the Israelites that they were about to anoint his half brother the mass murderer Abimelech as their king.

This means they were about to go against the advice of their father Gideon the late Judge who had saved them from the Midianites but had refused Kingship as a reward, because it was his belief that only god not men should rule Israel because hereditary monarchy was inherently immoral and dangerous.

Abimelech (an adopted name meaning crown prince) was the bastard son of Gideon and half brother of the other 69 sons of Gideon. Abimelech murder all but one of his brothers Jotham and their father as well anyone appointed as a councilor over Israel.
These were the Olives, figs and vines, who refused to rule as a king, where as Abimelech not only wanted to rule but would, if not anointed, make himself emperor by force of arms.

It is not literal and is the root (pun intended) of several of Jesus' parables about Israel as an olive grove fig tree or vine that had failed their potential.
