After news reports of micro plastics being found in sea salt is it safer to consume old fashioned table salt?

The majority of basic table salt is mined from salt domes, then purified and mixed w/ a diluent to prevent caking ie, "when it rains it pours" -- the original diluent was powdered limestone.... see wikipedia. The salt domes are way under the earth and have never seen plastics. Michigan is essentially riding on a massive salt dome (the original Dow chemical co. made its first money mining the dome - and Detroit, if I remember right, is on top of a major salt mine) --

Not caring for the diluents -- I prefer to use Kosher salt -- 100% real salt - since it's from the same vendor (Morton) - I'm pretty confident it's mined from salt domes. In most cases, I think, but don't know for sure, that even mined salt is purified/refined (else it is "rock salt" ) to remove trace minerals from the original as mined salt. There should be a You-tube video of this process, or a description on a salt vendors website, or wiki somewhere....

I've never followed the manufacture of sea salt -- just seen the pix of the large "trays" -- considering the number of birds that fly over these and that they are open to dust/pollen etc. ... I have a suspicion that there is a secondary purification step required for human consumption. I sure hope so!!

Salt is salt. There is no bad salt and good salt. It is all NaCl. The only reason I use refined table salt is that iodine is added to it. It is essential that we get iodine in our diets. Himalayan and sea salt does not have iodine added. Too much salt is of course not recommended. Lots of things can happen such as high blood pressure.High blood pressure leads to lots of problems. Everything in moderation. Most table salt comes from mines. I have been in one of the largest salt mines in the world in Pakistan. Huge trucks drive in and out of the mine openings. The walls are all light pink salt.

I think most table salt comes from salt mines, not the sea. I'm not sure, however.

It was all dissolved into ocean or salt lake water at one time. The vast majority is from sea water.

I know that. It's just that many of the mines are from sea water which dried up thousands of years ago; therefore, they would not be subject to the pollution found in our oceans now.

Regular table salt is so bad for you! I would continue using unrefined sea salt or try Himalayan pink salt. Microplastics are turning up in other places as well. It's going to be difficult to avoid them entirely.

Why is it bad for you?

@Ellatynemouth Regular table salt is bleached and chemically processed, stripping potassium and other trace minerals while adding anti-caking agents. Just like eating whole foods is better for you than processed foods, using "whole" salt is also better for you. Table salt is more likely to lead to hypertension than the less refined Himalayan pink salt. There's a lot of info out there if you Google it. I also think Celtic sea salt and Himalayan pink salt just taste better! It's more mellow and let's you taste the food, not just that strong, biting salt flavor. Hope that helps!
