How to Dress Well Without A Dress?
So I'm eighteen and my school prom is drawing near. I had no intention of going but my family and friends have roped me into saying I will. The problem is, you gotta dress nice for fancy events, I HATE fancy events though because I don't know HOW to dress nicely without wearing a skirt or a dress. I refuse to wear skirts, dresses, or makeup, not for some 'fuck male's' reason, but because I don't like how dresses and skirts flop all about, and I hate having gunk on my face! Plus my skin issue guarantees me hives or at least a rash if I put shit on my skin. So how the he'll do I dress well for a nice event without any of that? I don't wanna dress like a guy, I don't wanna wear a tux or anything, but I don't want the traditional fancy girl get up... I've no idea what to do!

Personally, I would skip the prom. I would experiment with "dressing up" at a less stressful event. You have to find Your way. Maybe try some different styles until one feels more "right" than the others. For example, the first time I wore makeup was to a big dance. I felt strange and artificial, and I did not enjoy the dance. Play with style and makeup/no makeup in your spare time. ps. Don't let people "rope" you into things. You sound like you have a mind of your own. Trust your thoughts/feelings.

Get some sweats and bedazzle them lol. Screw fancy gender stereotypes wear what makes YOU feel good in.

I can't relate at all because I'm terribly jealous of my daughters getting to get all dressed up for their winter formal and prom. I'm so girly and would love to wear a super fancy dress, get my hair and makeup done....sigh.

But this is about YOU! As the others have said, wear what you like and maybe try to "up" it a little so it's more fancy. I should have looked to see what size city you live in. Hopefully you are in a decent sized school or at least a more progressive one where you can get by with being more funky rather than traditional.

Would love to see what you end up coming up with (hint, hint, hint).

Dang, just creeped on your profile and see you're at a catholic school. Do you have to wear a uniform? I'm in MN and the catholic schools here all have uniforms. The girls are usually in dresses too.

I'm sorry. I'm sure this is anxiety inducing, high school is so hard without this added pressure for you. I may be 44 but if you need to vent or talk to someone, I'm happy to lend an ear. Feel free to message me.

I'll post what i come up with

I can relate my daughter does not like dresses either. Why don't you look at nice pant suits. Some of them are nice and not too dressy.

you don't have to dress nice for nice events.
Wear what you want.

Dress however you feel comfortable the most beautiful thing a woman can wear is a smile and it's a hell of a lot easier to smile when your comfortable.

I don't like dressing up either. I have had to for a lot of occaisions and I usually feel like another person when I wear a dress. I tried steps and stepping out of my comfort zone slowly Like experiment with a little makeup, try a little nude lipstick. Try a cute pantsuit, wear a dress for an hour, or work up to wearing one for a half a day. Lol! A new haircut is a good way to make a change. Like other's have suggested, look on Pinterest for looks you like. You shouldn't have to anything you don't want to do. Just be you.

Part of the problem is that I CAN'T wear make up

@Cha they do make cosmetics for almost any kind of skin, however if you don't like it, don't wear it. It's really not a necessity for looking nice. When I was a younger, not a teen but 30s maybe, I would never go out without makeup. Now I never wear it any more but that might just be my perceived notion of old people privilege. Lol. Dressy, flowy, pants, some might even be mistaken for a skirt, and a beautiful top or statement jewelry are always appropriate. Lastly, try and enjoy the experience, think of it as an anthropological experiment. Good luck whatever you decide.

Black dressy pants, a classic tunic top & maybe a bit of jewelry is always classic, comfy, & right. Who says you need to wear makeup??? If you feel like it, treat yourself to a cool hair ornament, or chalk in a bit of color! Oh, and sandals or high tops on your feet. And Dance!

I don't think you should even worry about how you're going to dress - if you don't want to go, don't go. You're officially an adult woman and you can do (or not do) whatever the hell you want.

Check the dress code and research outfits that would fit your style.
