"Assumption is the killer of discourse."

I have had assuming ____ bite me more than once. Here I assume everyone has some high level of disbelief in "gods" and are more open minded to deviations from societal norms. Reading through posts I've found we are more diverse than I would have thought. I had assumed dating was the main function of the group. It appears dating is below the levels of other topics. I was delighted to see the different categories and subgroups available and those lured me to stay and participate.

Science is the art of not fooling ourselves. It boils down to an eternal search for erroneous assumptions.
Step 1: make sure you're not effing up.
Step 2: repeat step 1.
It's no accident that the First Commandment ("Shut Up, and Don't Ask Questions" ) is the opposite of this.

There's a nice example of this in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", Robert Pirsig. His autobiographical character abandons a cherished motorcycle trip when his engine fails during a heavy rainstorm. He rocked the cycle, heard gas sloshing in the tank, so he knew he wasn't out of gas. Assuming some electrical ignition trouble brought on by the rain, he failed to get it to start, had it towed home, disappointed and depressed. There, he discovers he WAS out of gas because he'd neglected to switch to the reserve tank, where the sloshing sound came from. Doh.

I tend to think the 'dating' aspect advertised is there to entice younger people in so that the group is not too middle-aged or top-heavy. You never know, you may find a like-minded person in your area. It's a good site for chatting and getting to know a wide range of people, and possibly moving outside your comfort zone in conversation.
