Now this makes sense to me:

Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own common sense. - Buddha

This seems to be quite different than the scientific method. I find that method to be reliable for new sources of information.

Dangerous mantra. Translates to if you don't like it, don't believe it. Take global warming for instance, scientific fact, but if you don't like it, you can withdraw from the Paris Agreement 🙂

I think some of these Buddha quotes are so loose and open ended as to mean anything. They're not useful in the real world.

So, he’s saying don’t believe what he says.

This is what the Flat Earthers say

Isn't that how unpresident trump think and act?

What he really said:

“Now, Kalamas, don’t go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, ‘This contemplative is our teacher.’ When you know for yourselves that, ‘These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted & carried out, lead to welfare & to happiness’ — then you should enter & remain in them."

But I didn't know that 5 minutes ago, which version do you like better?

This translation from the Buddha's teaching may provide some additional insight

That makes absolutely NO sense whatsoever.
I mean, unless you're happy living in your own personal echo chamber, never
hearing anything that opposes your own positions.
Sometimes, our own "reason" and "common sense" are neither. We all
need to consistently examine other points of view, and often rethink many
of our own.

Oh, and Buddha never said that.

3

And by the same token, I doubt it...... I would say that philosophical principle was established by Descartes (I don't really know anything about Buddha anyway)

1

I give people 3 fake quotes or news sources within the span of a year, you only have two left, make them good ones.

1

that depends on one's level of education

2

I don't have that kind of faith in a lot of people's reason or commonsense.
As I'm sure some feel the same of mine.

1

He put way too much FAITH in the ability of some to reason.
