I was recently discussing this exact topic with a group of friends. Specifically our talk was about "boards" that advise academics. Now of the most part these boards ("friends of" ) are made up of high dollar donors who have been successful enough to give enough to be rewarded with a "supposedly" advisory position. Having had careers on both sides of this equation I have been on one of these boards and resigned because they are a waste of time. But, I gained this insight: The board and the group the board is supposed to be advising are not motivated by the same goals. People who place the accumulation of knowledge ahead of the accumulation of wealth are not motivated by the same things and for one of these groups to advise the other in an attempt to direct their behavior is doomed to failure. In every instance I observed the "advisees" listen politely to the "advisors" (because that's where the funds to continue the actual work comes from) and then the "advisees" do what they were going to do anyway to advance the level of knowledge.
