America The Armed

I've shot guns since I was young (never owned) am have many friends that are responsible gun owners. I don't think stripping all guns is the answer to violence within the country. On the flip side I think it's asinine that we're arming teachers, etc. I think there's a huge issue with mental health that should be addressed, but I also acknowledge it's not the only part of the issue.

I think a huge problem is that so many people are afraid to even try the various possible resolutions and risk "being wrong". I usually don't agree with politicians when they pack in multiple parts of a law/bill because I think it clouds the issues and they just use it to sneak in a lot of B.S. In this case though I think it would be beneficial to have multiple resolutions addressed at once so we can at least make strides to reduce violence (both in terms of mass shootings as well as individual shootings).

I know this is a touchy topic for many Americans and often ends in tense arguments. With the hope that members of this site can stick to nice discussions: What's everyone think?

Agree with another post that responsible gun ownership is an oxymoron. Have never shot a gun or needed to in 70 years of life. Never think about guns. Boring as hell. I do think about the young children slaughtered in Newtown, CT;literally shot to pieces, and our alleged president entertains Lapierre in the white House and keeps a picture of Andrew Jackson on the wall, and thinks Andrew was a good guy. Enough said.

The media has an agenda, it tends to focus on guns being used to kill rather than being used to protect. Example, this story notes a murderer was held at GUN-POINT by a civilian as they waited for police to arrive, yet this story has received practically no attention. There are plenty of videos on Youtube of civilians using guns to scare off people using guns to harm. I think disarming people is not an ideal option in the US. We should focus on security - not only with police, but also with teachers and civilians. Crime is not only occurring in schools.

Funny that you talk of the media having an agenda and then reference Fox News.

"Responsible gun owners" is almost an oxymoron.
If you need one for your job and you're properly trained, fair enough.
If you are one of a tiny minority of farmers or ranchers at risk of bear or cougar attack or predation on your livelihood and you're properly trained and regulated, fair enough.
Any other reason is irresponsible by definition.

Frankly I disagree.

Having an antique Luger 19mm pistol or even an antique Russian Mosin–Nagant .762 rifle for the sake of fun/entertainment and as a way to honor history such as a good friend in VA has I feel is perfectly acceptable if kept in safe places and maintenance properly when not in use. My friend in question does not believe Americans need guns for protection (except in the cases you also listed) but also thinks it is a great disservice to history if we strip all weapons from collectors such as himself. He teaches amateur classes about gun safety and proper weapon registration, etc... and discusses the impact such weapons have had on society both in ancient past as well as current events.

He is no where near what I would call "a gun nut", and neither are the other friends I have that freely admit their guns are for "fun".

Much like religion we can't make the mistake of painting all people that take a certain stance as "dumb", "evil", etc.... these are complex discussions that need to be looked at from multiple angles.

We need to get rid of "gun free zones", they are easy targets, and public schools are just that, so I'm not surprised this happened again. Funny thing is, I never hear about shootings at a gun range or at an NRA convention, you would think folks in this enlightened age would learn their lesson, but alas that is not the case.

In a perfect world there would be no problem, people could have guns coming out of their ears and no threat.
Sadly it is far from a perfect world,
yes, radicals and mental illness are big problems.
Over population is also part of the problem, too many people causes stress, stress in so many areas of our lives. And the populations are getting bigger.
I can not see that America will ever be able to reduce the levels of gun ownership and shootings.
Yes, tighter controls and more restrictions would help. but it won't happen.
Same as here, we need big changes to our political system, it won't happen.
