Yes the human mind makes up placeholders for the unknown and for emptiness. This does not however necessarily mean the things it makes up have any validity. Also, when you take your attention off the obvious that clambers for attention, you'll notice things you were previously filtering out. This does not however necessarily mean the things you now become aware of are important or relevant.

An example of the latter would be that if I'm having dinner with someone and ignore what they are saying, I will become aware of background chatter and clinking utensils. However that noise is just noise, it is not some underlying profundity to my dinner companion's witty banter.
