I was just watching "Dear White People' on Netflix. There is a party at a house on campus. Rap song playing and the crowd flowing to the music. White guy and his black friend dancing with some girls singing to the music. Rap song says Nigga and White guy says Nigga, then his black friend says you can use that word...a fight starts and then the police show up.
Funny because couple of days ago I saw Pulitzer Prize winner Kendrick Lemar playing somewhere. He invited a while woman up on stage and then same deal, song says Nigga and she says Nigga and Lemar is outraged, she can't use that word.
Really? What do you think?

As with all words, context is important.

I really am not sure. Yes it makes no sense to offend others by use of a word. Using ethnic slurs can hurt and there is no argument in defense of this usage if the intent is to hurt. But in this case the word is in a song that the singers are singing along to or celebrating. This word is used blatantly in Rap, it is used endearingly by some...it has lost its racial slur connotation between Blacks, but even major White talent such as Eminem rarely (if ever) use the word.

The concept of slavery and racial bigotry surround the origin of the word and perhaps Blacks insistence on the sole propriety of their use must be respected as a form of cultural reparation for the existence of the word in the first place.

Never understood the we are taking it back thing with words . If a word is that offensive don't use it . Deciding who can and cannot use it is just an excuse to cause an argument
