How did your parents first take the news finding out you're an atheist?

Mom cried. Then yelled in anger saying "so you just think my (deceased) father is just nowhere right now!?

My dad was essentially an atheist, we never talked about my being an atheist, but he knew. My mom was disappointed, but I don't think she was surprised.

Was raised strict Catholic. Have been doubter since 15. Eventually switched from agnostic to atheist. After much praying over they gave up & stayed close!

Afaik my parents were too.
Religion wasn't a concern.

As a parent, I would freak out if my kids became religious. I brought them up as kind, loving, giving atheists.

Mum was surprisingly okay with it. She is pretty supportive like that. Although she says I'm no longer fun to watch ghost shows with because I'm too rational ?

ha, my old man has been dead over 21 years and my mother does not believe me.

It was one sided drama. My parents hassled me for a week trying to figure out where they went wrong in raising me, I didn't understand what the fuss was about. They just thought it was a rebellious phase. They still do, I'm 22.

I sort of faced that same thing when I told my dad how I view stuff, he told me you know I was suppose to be a preacher right ....what a barn burner that would have been

Technically I'm a Panthiest, but my parents have always been athiest/agnostic and always believed that people can believe whatever they want as long as their beliefs don't hurt, or repress anyone. So they took it fine.

I was so adamant about being right that it took me 5-6 months to learn not to be an asshole about pushing my non beliefs.
My parents are much more at peace now than they were at first regarding my coming out as a non believer.
