Though I am 65, I am a young atheist, having emerged from faith to reason in 2013. I was publicly excommunicated from the Presbyterian Church of America for apostasy ( I badge I now wear proudly ). I enjoy intelligent, mutually respectful, stimulating conversation.

I started having doubts around age 50 and, after spending several years in denial, was fully de-converted by age 55 and have never looked back. I enjoy stimulating conversations as well but it's hard to have one with believers because they ignore facts and basic truths. It's the price we pay for being among the heathen I suppose.

Amen to that. I was a ruling elder in a relatively large and multicultural church here in Jackson, Ms. The light of skepticism actually shone upon me as I studied and prepared a sermon for the church during a period of our pastor's sabbatical! Given that 95% of my friendships were church based, and my wife was a believer, I initially thought I would begin to exist as a "closet atheist". But I was so overwhelmed by my new world view based on reason and reality that I couldn't keep the "gospel" to my self. I would ask my friends and fellow elders probing questions about faith and the doctrines based on Biblical dogma. Didn't take long for me to let the cat out of the bag. The pastor and session wasted no time to call me in for questioning. I was convicted of apostasy and quickly taken to the gallows! I did tell the session that I was fortunate to be living in the 21st century as a convicted apostate facing nothing more than public censorship and excommunication. Free-thinkers in previous centuries were risking being burnt alive.
Where do you live?
I'm 60 and have recently reconnected with my inner child- who knew from the beginning that organized religion is BS- and am all the more content for it.
