Just a guess, but I'd wager at least 75%. The rest is varying levels of apathetic stupidity...

It's a huge part of the problem - mainly because we now know too much about one another. Many have also mistaken being outraged on social media as actually doing something...when it is nothing more than mental masturbation. It has helped us find groups of people who think similarly - but in doing so, it has allowed us to create a bubble around ourselves so that only the information we want, from our chosen groups, is allowed to get in. Anything that gets in, that we disagree with, is seen as an attack. And if we start to disagree with our chosen group, we just leave in a huff and find another group. It has lead to greater tribalization within our culture.

But our overall culture is in trouble. We watched our parents and/or grandparents generation and their social activity in the 60's, and felt we had to be just as socially active. But in doing so, we started to create problems where there were none. Began to demand social justice for people that weren't fighting for it themselves. And we forced a culture to accept things it wasn't even close to ready to accept. I mean, hell, we still have people that think the South will rise again - and then we are surprised when people aren't on board with gay marriage?! I'm not saying these people are right in their thinking....but dragging them into the "future" won't make it better, it just means that the pendulum will swing back violently (and that's how you get President Trump).

We have also raised several generations - including my own - where it was more important that they had good self esteem, than it was to show the the harsh realities of life. Basically, the participation trophy generation. Now we are trying to "eradicate" bullying. It's not that I'm pro-bullying, or that I want to crush the dreams of kids, but without that dose of reality, you get adults who don't know how to handle conflict. You get generations of people that assume that if you are outraged, or offended, that means you are right. Because they've never had someone challenge them.

This is a bit of a stream of consciousness response - I could go on and on - essentially social medial while a huge part of the problem - it is not the only cause of our current issues.

It's made it more visible.

It doesn’t. It’s just the current medium for expressing outrage. I mean nothing people get outraged about nowadays as any worse in my opinion than people getting outraged about different looking people drinking out of the same water fountain as you.

With a generation that take memes as fact, social media has the potencial to do more harm than good. In my humble opinion.
