I’m starting to feel rather sorry for the Holy Spirit, which seems to get a raw deal all in all. For starters, is “it” gender neutral? In literature, the Holy Spirit doesn’t even seem to possess a suitable pronoun, both the Christian god and JC himself both get the rather alpha-male “He” (always with a capital aitch, naturally). “It” (even with a capital “I&rdquo seems rather demeaning for the third person of the Trinity (btw how come “It” is always third?).
In art, it seems to get even worse treatment, not for “It” flowing locks, coiffed facial hair, open-heart surgery pictures, Pietàs, or martyrdom on a cross; no, at best “It” gets represented by a dove. Even Satan seems to get more coverage – literally in many paintings.
I was in Catholic Cathedral last year marveling at the ceiling frescoes and in saw that the censer appear to be suspended from a chain which emerged from the dove’s rear-end. Such ignominy.
I’m starting to doubt if old Ghostie is a full member of the Trinity at all, “It” seems to have been shoe-horned in, somehow. Does “It” have some kind of Associate Membership? If so, I’d rather fancy this myself.
