Somethig is amiss in calculating the current user level.
I am currently level 7. As I write this, I am 21,491 points to go on a goal of 50,000 -- I have 28,509 points toward that 50,000. Since I'm past the halfway point (25,000) I am clearly somewhere beyond 7.5, yet my level shows as 7.4.
What's happening, I think, is you're taking my points remaining as a percentage of 50,000 rather than my points toward the goal. Unless it's just a coincidence.
In any case my level should by 7.57 -- that is, (28,509 x 100) / 50000 -- which would show as either 7.5 or 7.6 depending on whether you truncate or round to 1 decimal place. Instead it is 7.4 which is consistent with (21,491 x 100) / 50,000 = 7.42982. On the other hand my level has gradually risen to 7.4 from 7.0 and if you were using the "points left" as input to the percentage calculation it would have been dropping.
I leave it to you to determine the actual cause but I can't see how you would arrive at 7.4 when I'm past the halfway point in my level.
you are past the halfway point between level 7 (10,000 points) & level 8 (50,000 points) at 30,000 points, which is the sum of level 7 & half of the difference towards level 8, or 20,000. 7.1 would therefore be 14,000 points, 7.2 18,000, 7.3 22,000 & so forth. clean maths, & there's nothing wrong with the point system.
The levels page states that there are 50,000 points between levels 7 and 8, of which I've already earned more than 25,000. As of this writing it states I have earned 28,869 with 21,131 to go. 28,869 + 21,131 = 50,000. I thought about it your way at first too, but either the math is wrong or the presentation is wrong or ambiguously stated.
I guess if I'm headed for a total of 50,000 since signing up then the numbers line up and it's the presentation that is a bit confusing. It looked to me as if the tallies are for your progress through the current level rather than all levels.
@mordant, you are wrong. the points/levels page states you are level 7 with 10,000 points & level 8 with 50,000 points, which is 40,000 points further on from 10,000. simple maths, as i mentioned already. are you sure you're a software developer?
@walklightly Don't be an ass.
I think this could be cleared up if the heading said "Total points needed" rather than "What's needed" for example. The gap between levels 7 and 8 is large enough relative to the prior ones that before that you could read it either way and the difference wouldn't matter enough to the level calculation for you to notice unless you were really obsessive about it.
@mordant, booooooooring.
@walklightly Well hey it's a win all around. I got my question answered. The admins didn't have to answer it. You get to feel supercilious at my expense. What's not to like?
@mordant, if you hadn't insisted on your error it needn't have become such an epic tale. but even now - instead of going with the plain evidence - you keep making assumptions. which superpower authorizes you to tell the world how i feel? superciliousness certainly is not in MY repertoire.
