Geeze, yeah, S.D. is a "fire-at-will" state (which I think is wrong, anyway). But to end a guy's employment the minute after he wins the nomination race against you? That's a whole 'nother level of stupid and cold. You gotta know that ain't gonna play out well.Maybe the sitting sheriff decided that at this point he just didn't GAF? Deprive his deputy and his family of his wages AND healthcare? Idk....
